Understanding TV Parental Guidelines and Using Parental Controls. #FiOSNY

This is a sponsored conversation on behalf of Verizon FiOS.

E is at that age where she now has the ability to use different devices like her tablet or television without help. I never really had to worry about what she was watching on TV or on her tablet because I have always supervised this kind of entertainment and for the most part, I was the one putting on the age appropriate show or movie. Most of those shows are movies are TV-Y which I knew was appropriate for all ages but now that she’s getting older, I’m starting to notice the different guideline ratings of some entertainment intended for children.

Understanding TV Parental Guidelines and Using Parental Controls. #FiOSNY

I’m sure we’ve all seen the little black squares in the corner of our television screens. If you’re like me and not completely familiar with all of the guidelines and meanings of the abbreviated letters, Here is a quick guide to help you determine if the content your children are watching is appropriate.

TV-Y
Programs rated TV-Y are appropriate for children of all ages. The themes in programs with this rating are specifically designed for a young audience which include children from ages 2–6.

TV-Y7
Programs rated TV-Y7 are appropriate for children age 7 and up. Program themes may include mild fantasy violence or comedic violence. The content may not be appropriate for children under the age of 7.

TV-G
Programs rated TV-G are generally suitable for all ages. Programming with this rating contain very little or no violence, no strong language, and little or no sexual dialogue or situations.

TV-PG
Programs rated TV-PG may not be suitable for younger children. Programs with this rating contain material that parents might find inappropriate for younger children and can include some mild profanity, some sexual content, suggestive dialogue and/or violence.

TV-14
Programs rated TV-14 contain some material that most parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years old. Programs with this rating may contain suggestive dialogue, coarse or crude language, sexual situations, or violence.

TV- MA
Program rated TV-MA is designed to be viewed by adults and is not suitable for children under 17. Programs with this rating may contain: coarse or crude language, sexual situations, and/or violence.

Below are descriptions of content labels which are sub-ratings. The letters are usually located right at the bottom of a rating. Here is what those letters mean:

D – Suggestive dialogue (in sexual nature)
L – Coarse or crude language
S – Sexual situations
V – Violence
FV – Fantasy violence (this is exclusive to children’s programming)

You can read more about parental guidelines on the Verizon website!

Let’s face it, As much as some parents would like to, we can’t be hovering over our children at all time to make sure the content that they’re watching is appropriate for their age group. This is why I’m thankful for FiOS Quantum TV and the FiOS Mobile app which has made setting parental controls EASY! They offer parents more control over the programming and content children can access, enabling parents to:

  • Use ratings to block what content can be viewed
  • Use age preferences to block content for a particular age group
  • Control the display of adult programming and information
  • Block specific channels
  • Block access to widgets that have potential harmful/private content (such as social networking Widgets for Facebook and Twitter)

To set up and use Parental Controls from your remote, follow the instructions found on the Verizon website. Setting up parental controls is just as simple on the app! While in your app, tap on Settings and then on Parental Control. You will then need to enter your pin and if you haven’t set up a pin, you will be able to set up one.

The app gives you five options to chose from and each option features a short description on what the selection means. For example, If I select “All Ages”, the content is suitable for every age and includes ratings TV-Y, TV-G, and G rated programming.

Once I select the parental controls, certain content that may be inappropriate from children will be blocked from viewing.

Disabling the parental controls is just as easy for parents, not kids, to turn on or off! Just select Parental Controls and the ON and select OFF. From the FiOS Mobile App, you would tap the “Activate Parental Control” button.

Do you currently use parental controls?

Taking the Plunge like Norm of the North! #BreakTheNorm #IC

This post was sponsored by Lionsgate as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central.

E is a lot like me in some ways. For one, it can be hard to get her to move out of her comfort zone depending on the situation. For the most part she is an outgoing and social kid but when first introduced to a situation, she can become uncomfortable. When E started Pre-K a few months ago, she was excited at the prospect of meeting new friends. When it got closer to the first day of school, she became a bit nervous and apprehensive. The big question is what can you do as a parent? One thing I did was gently encourage her to ‘take the plunge’. Although E was hesitant on her first day of Pre-K, I told her that she won’t know how it will be until she tries it! I made sure to point out the exciting things about starting school like meeting new friends and learning new things. Sure, there might be some obstacles along the way but that’s a part of growing up.

Taking the Plunge like Norm of the North! #BreakTheNorm #IC

In some ways E can totally relate to Norm, the main character in Lionsgate’s new film Norm of the North. In the movie, we are introduced to a big-hearted and talkative polar bear named Norm (sounds like a little girl I know 😉 ). Norm ventures from the Arctic to NYC to prevent his beloved home from being overtaken by developers. Not only does Norm take on the Big Apple and big business, he deals with a big identity crisis as he tries to save the day with the help of some friends!

Taking the Plunge like Norm of the North! #BreakTheNorm #IC

We are so excited for Norm of the North and in anticipation of it’s release, we created a polar bear craft and worked in this fun activity book pictured below!

Taking the Plunge like Norm of the North! #BreakTheNorm #IC

Our polar bear craft was super easy to put together and is appropriate for all ages! All you need is the following supplies:

  • White construction paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Black pipe cleaner
  • Large googly eyes

Taking the Plunge like Norm of the North! #BreakTheNorm #IC

To create, trace and cut two large circles and two smaller circles using the white paper. Then using the two large circles, Glue the bottom circle partially on top of the other large circle. Paste the two smaller circles on top as the ears. Using the black paper, cut out nose shape and glue that toward the middle of the bear. After pasting the nose, glue the bears mouth on using the pipe cleaners. Once that’s finished, add the eyes and voila, you have your polar bear!

We also loved watching Norm dace the “Arctic Shake” in the video which you can play below! We have a lot of fun dancing and mimicking norm’s steps. C’mon and “Shake your Bear Thing” just like in the film!

Norm of the North arrives in theaters on January 15, 2016 and stars Rob Schneider as Norm and some other big names in entertainment including Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, and Bill Nighy! Bear to be different and see Norm of the North in theaters!
