I’ll be honest, when I was a pregnant with my first I didn’t realize how important calcium intake is when you’re expecting! When I think calcium, I immediately associate it with bones. Growing up, my mom would always encourage us to drink milk because “the calcium in it will make your bones strong!” When you’re pregnant, if you don’t get enough calcium in your daily diet, your baby’s calcium needs will be met by taking it from your bones. This can put your own bone health at risk!
When I became pregnant with my first, I quickly learned that pregnant women need CALCIUM to preserve bone mass. The proper intake of calcium helps prevent a pregnant woman’s body from taking calcium from her bones. This also helps to decrease a women’s risk of osteoporosis. There are a number of ways to get calcium when you’re pregnant, here is just a few:
There are plenty of foods that are rich in calcium, one of those being milk. Some of my favorites include kale, yogurt, almonds, and broccoli. Other foods that I was surprised to discover are calcium rich are ones like seaweed, white beans and sardines. Sardines are one thing I wouldn’t have taken part in but every pregnant woman is different! Sometimes calcium rich foods are just not enough.
Vitamins and Supplements
Calcium can be found in most prenatal vitamins but, many prenatal vitamins provide only 20-30% of the daily amount of calcium that is recommended for pregnant women. In a survey of 1,000 OB/GYN offices nationwide, 7 out of 10 OB/GYNS recommend a calcium supplement during pregnancy. Of those who do, 9 out of 10 recommend Viactiv**.
One Viactiv CALCIUM CHEW taken up to twice daily provides pregnant women with the calcium they need daily (1000 mg total), plus vitamins D and K. Very few foods in nature contain Vitamin D and Viactiv Calcium Soft Chews contain 500 IU of vitamin D in every chew to assist with absorption.
VIACTIV CALCIUM SOFT CHEWS are available in milk chocolate or caramel flavors at supermarket, drugstores and major retailers nationwide, including CVS, Rite Aid, Target and Walmart. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant, make sure to speak with your healthcare provider before taking any supplements.
