Are you considering an upcoming move? Whether it’s purchasing a new home or moving to a rental, When a family or individual decides to relocate there is a LOT to consider. As many of us know, Moving is not an easy task because there are so many details involved. Here are just a few things to take into consideration before or while planning your move.
If you have a family or plan on having children, I think one of the most important things you need to consider is the school district in the particular area you plan to move to. While looking for homes and rentals, I make sure to look up the district and where my children would potentially be going to school. My preferred resource is k12.niche.com which I have found to be pretty accurate.
Nowadays, there are also other options besides for public schools. You can choose charter schools, private schools, and even an online schools.
Amount of Crime
Another important thing to consider when you move is the amount of crime in the area. It’s amazing how much crime can vary from block to block. Sites like Trulia allow you to view the crime in a particular area.
Recreation, Shopping and Entertainment
You certainly want to be close to the things you love doing, Am I right? If you have kids or just like to get out and being active, You’ll want to make sure places like parks and other entertainment are within distance. Of course it makes a big difference when moving to a rural area versus the suburbs or a city but overall, you know what you want and will have to make that decision.
Where we currently reside, I’m a stones throw away from shopping malls, movie theaters and other forms of entertainment. We have farms, beaches and even a theme park not far from us. When we do move, I want to make sure that we are still around these things. My rule of thumb is to be no more than 10 minutes away from the closest shopping center. 😉
Cost of Living
Believe it or not, a simple 20-minute move can really change your budget so cost of living is something you’re going to want to take into consideration. Depending on where you relocate to, your utilities could go up or down. If you plan on purchasing a home, property taxes could be higher or lower depending on the area. When leasing, your rent could be significantly higher or lower, even if you are moving a short distance away.
The Neighborhood and Community
Something else you should consider before you move is both the neighborhood you are moving to and the community. The people you will be living by can make or break your day. You can’t run a background check on each neighbor so a neighborhood is one of those things that you do have to judge a book by its cover. Some towns and cities have their Facebook groups and forums. I suggest finding and joining those groups so that you can learn more about a community and neighbors.
Phone, Internet and Cable Providers
We currently have Verzion so when we do move, I want to make sure we can get the Verizon FiOS service. Finding out where their service is available is easy!
