Something you probably don’t know about our family is that we often take road trips. We usually stay within the state and have we’ve been all over, from as north as Sussex county and as south as Cape May. There is so much New Jersey has to offer us including farms, beaches, boardwalks, national parks and more! There is always something new to discover right in our backyard!
With all of the road tripping we do, it’s important to stay prepared with the essentials, especially when traveling with our young children which include E, age 4, and Aric who is 14 months old. Here are some of our family road trip essentials, Items that we wouldn’t travel without!
Family Road Trip Essentials!
Food and snacks!
Bring things that aren’t as messy. Some snack foods I consider road trip friendly are applesauce pouches, apple slices, raisins, popcorn, chips, pretzels, crackers and juice boxes or a cup with a lid like a Snackeez. You may want to bring along a small cooler to keep sandwiches and your beverages cold. For us, a case of bottled water or a gallon jug or two has been a must. If you have the space, I say bring it along! You can never have too much water.
Games, toys and activities.
Some things to take along for the kids include paper, coloring books, crayons, small toys, and books. We keep these items easily accessible to the kids in a back seat organizer that even has a tablet holder. I also use plastic shoe bins which I keep on the seat in between E and her brother which holds toys and other items for both of them. When it comes to games, some of our favorite car ride games include I Spy.
Before we had a tablet, E would watch DVDs from a portable DVD player attached to the drivers seat headrest. Most vehicles nowadays have built in DVD players but some basic vehicle models do not. Portable DVD players cost a lot less than they did a few years ago and it might be a good idea to invest in one for long road trips if you don’t already have on for your kids. Now that E has her own tablet, we make sure that her favorite movies and games are downloaded to it before going on the road. Don’t forget the headphones! You’ll thank me later 😉
An Emergency Kit.
Most vehicles now have this but some don’t. An emergency kit should include more than just a first-aid kit. Some items you may want to keep in your kit are a flashlight, road flares and/or reflective triangles, jumper cables, a blanket or two, extra sets of clothing, toiletries and bottled water. If you have young children, you may want to keep diapers, wipes, extra snacks and as previously mentioned, extra clothing, in your kit. Make sure the clothing you keep in your kit is seasonally appropriate.
