Growing up, There were a lot of traditions that I shared with my family. Now that I have a family of my own, we have started some new traditions while including some of the old. Here are just a few!
Decorating the Christmas Tree
I always loved decorating the tree as a kid. My children are little so I basically have free rein when it comes to tree decorating. To be honest, I’m kind of perfectionist when it comes to this activity. Now that E is a little older, she likes to participating in the decorating process so I help her out by guiding her where to place ornaments. She does have a space on the side of the tree where she is free to decorate in whatever way she wants. 😉
Watching Christmas Themed Specials and Movies
Around mid-November, we start watching holiday themed shows and movies to get into the spirit. Some of my personal favorites include Scrooged, Love Actually and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Titles we enjoy as a family are Elf, All I Want For Christmas, The Santa Clause, and many others! I always make sure to check the TV listings and this year I have my handy FiOS Mobile app as a guide!
I look up what we want to watch to see when the show or movie is coming on television or if it’s On Demand. I’ve actually come across a lot of great holiday films On Demand that we are able to rent or buy. This is one of the many awesome things about being a Verizon FiOS customer!
Pictures with Santa at the Mall
Visiting Santa at the mall is something I didn’t get to do as a kid but would have liked to. When E was a baby, we started bringing her to the mall for pictures with Santa that usually go on our Christmas card. There was only one year that we visited Santa but opted out for the photo because we had got her photos professionally done. Elise LOVES this tradition! This is a big deal for her and the thought of getting to chat with Santa brings her so much joy! I was hoping that her baby brother would enjoy it just as much but, well…
Not so much! It’s funny, We’ve passed by Santa plenty of times and Aric has smiled at him and even waved! I suppose sitting on the big guy’s lap is a different story. Who knows, maybe he’ll warm up to Santa next year!
Calling friends and loved ones
I make an effort to call friends and loved ones not local to us during the holidays just to catch up. Sure, we can catch up with each other on social media but a phone call is so much more personal. I appreciate having the reliability of a home phone which is what we use to make most of out phone calls around the holidays!
Elise is a big talker and I’ll be honest, she’ll do most of the conversing but our friends and family love talking to her and I’m glad she can put a smile on the faces of many! She wants to make sure or loved ones know all about how her life is going. From school to friends, who knew that a 4-year-old could have that much going on?
Baking Cookies for Santa!
This was a tradition growing up and I’m keeping the tradition going with my own kids. There isn’t a recipe we consistently use although we do usually end up baking chocolate chip cookies. Typically, I’ll browse recipes on the web and from other blogs and pick one to try the day we make them or the day before.
This year, We are changing it up a bit by baking ginger bread men and reindeer instead! Wish us luck!
Visiting Family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
I’ve never hosted Christmas so we usually end up visiting my family and Lonnie’s family on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. We call this traveling our “world tour” because we have SO many places and people to visit. It can be quite hectic but it’s sort of been a tradition since we started this family five years ago. It’s also my least liked tradition becasue of all the running around! 😆
