Thank you Captain McFinn & Friends for sponsoring this post!
I’m always looking for apps that stimulate E’s mind and encourage learning. What I hadn’t found was something the promotes social and emotional growth until recently when I came across Captain McFinn’s Swim & Play app for preschoolers from Captain McFinn & Friends.
The Captain McFinn Swim & Play app encourages social and emotional skills in preschool children, ages 3-5. The app will help them learn to get along with others and be successful in school and life by offering teachable moments that share the importance of those life skills. Some of the of social skills the app promotes are sharing and politeness, playing as a group, asking for help, being thankful and respecting others through games, songs, stories and the live, guided play. The app also promotes kindergarten readiness and can be put into practice at home, at school and at play. All activities take place in an animated underwater world with a live, interactive experience to engage children.
In the latest version of the app, Children will discover three alternating worlds which includes:
- Sand Dusty Reef- The home of Captain McFinn.
- Riff Raff Reef- An area that focuses on preventing bullying behaviors.
- The Unsmashable Cross Section- A sunken ship that focuses on using proper manners in everyday life.
These worlds offer 250 animated “hot spots” featuring interactive McFinn characters. Not only will your preschooler explore the alternating worlds, they will discover original McFinn cartoons, preschool music videos and songs plus eight different activities focusing on drawing, creating music and reading.
What makes Captain McFinn & Friends unique is that they are the only children’s entertainment brand out there featuring live interactive play that is guided by a host called an “Explorer”. You read correctly, In the Captain McFinn’s Swim & Play app you will find real, live people, known as Explorers that will respond in real time and encourage children while they are enjoying fun games and learning activities. The Explorers even address individual game play and learning by the child’s animated avatar name! Preschoolers can see the Explorers floating in a little submarine across their screen but not to worry, the Explorers can’t see them.
There are fun badges that can be collected for completing activities and a chat box so that parents to ask the Explorer questions. There is even a clap button, allowing your child to cheer on other users!
You might find it interesting that Captain McFinn is a part of a select group of other premier children’s entertainment brands in nabi Elev-8’s content lineup. The nabi Elev-8, which launched in October, is Fuhu’s most advanced and powerful kid-focused tablet to date.
Since downloading the app, it has become one of E’s favorites to use! She loves when the Explorers interact with her and other users and how they provide fun activities, ask questions, and even address her by her name! Another fun feature is that children can have their artwork shown by Explorers. This hasn’t happened to E yet but she is looking forward to the day!
E really enjoys the music and videos included in the app. The songs are really catchy and the videos are a blast to watch and touch on subjects like bullying.
Our last host, Explorer Catalina, was so energetic and really got E excited about the different activities she provided and guided! She asked the children questions and discussed subjects like being thankful. Explorer Catalina also sent E and other users on little missions which included the one below where children were encouraged to visit The Unmashable and meet characters in that area like Three Tooth, pictured below. Users were then asked to tap on the characters that that saw. This led into a story about Three Tooth and his friends.
E loves playing all of the games but one of her favorites at the moment is the Who Will I Be? game where she can mix and match clothes to create fun outfits! This encourages her creativity by allowing her to select different types of clothing and inspires her to dream big!
Another fun activity for E was following and engaging with the Muncha Buncha Lunch Table Manners story where she was asked questions and given interactive ways to participate in the story. The interactive book promotes manners that can be used in everyday life!
As a parent and former Early Childhood Educator, I appreciate how the app has a focus on social and emotional development which is something I haven’t seen with other apps geared towards preschoolers. I love how the Captain McFinn’s Swim & Play promotes those necessary life skills in a gentle and fun way where children that age can understand! When it comes to my favorite part of the app, it’s definitely the live interaction from the Explorers. All of the Explorers we have experienced so far in the app have been amazing! You can expect high energy and encouragement as they guide your child in the game.
Captain McFinn’s Swim & Play is available in the Apple Store and through Google Play for just $2.99! Learn more about the app by visiting the Captain McFinn and Friends website!
